ONE HUNDRED & SIXTEEN/ old world underground

The Diefenbunker is a four-story, 300 room, 100,000 square foot underground bunker, and was meant to house 535 Canadian government officials and military officers in the event of a nuclear war. Shrouded in mystery, the Diefenbunker, nicknamed after then Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, was designed and built in secrecy during the crest of Cold War fear, between 1959 and 1961. The name of the facility was given by a Toronto Star journalist who exposed a story of its development. - The Difenbunker's Official Website

The Diefenbunker is unlike anywhere I've ever been before, or anything I've ever seen. It is literally a bunker that is hidden so far underground that it is built to withstand a nuclear blast. The place is enormous and it is equipped with everything imaginable. There are medical rooms, surgical rooms, dental rooms, board rooms, decontamination showers, rooms dedicated to radio broadcasting, a bank vault, and so much more.

The bunker is absolutely phenomenal and if you live in Ottawa, or have a chance to visit here, I highly recommend going to see it for yourself. They did a fantastic job of preserving everything; it truly feels as though you walked through a time machine and ended up back in the '60s. It has a bit of a creepy vibe to it, which I absolutely adore, and with a good chunk of the rooms being dedicated to a traditional museum type experience - it is very educational. I went with Aurelia and we both enjoyed the bunker immensely. We just sort of wandered around and took in all of the sites and readings for ourselves but there was so much to look at and do, it was a bit overwhelming. I'm already planning my next trip back and I'm hoping to go on a guided tour for the next time around.

If you're familiar with The Hunger Games trilogy - it is a bit reminiscent of District 13. Or at least that's what was on my mind the entire time I was down there.

I wore super comfortable clothes to go out and explore the bunker and I'm happy that I did. There was a lot of walking and a few stairs. Being as underground as it is, it was downright cold so I'm happy that I brought my trusty denim jacket with me.
