THIRTY-FOUR/ beetlejuice

Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice.

It is no secret that I love black and white together. From stripes, to polka dots, to gingham, to just solid pieces - if it's black and white I must have it. I jumped on this blazer from Forever 21 the second that I laid eyes on it. I love the Beetlejuice vibe it gives off and I love how cropped and fitted it is. These leggings are something I have been lusting over since I saw pictures/videos of Azealia Banks at Coachella last year. I have been looking high and low for these leggings ever since but I was never quick enough at finding them online and the quality of the ones I found in store were always embarrassingly poor. Eventually I thought to look on eBay and I found an amazing high waisted pair. Unfortunately they were too good to be true, and fit extremely small (I later gave them to Laura). I tried my luck again with eBay, and although these fit perfectly, they're a bit too low rise for my liking. I might have to add some extra fabric so they stay up, if that fails - the hunt continues.

I paired this look with my huge heart shaped purse that I thrifted a couple of months ago and my new Creepers from New Look. These are probably the best shoes I own right now. They are extremely comfortable and I love the way creepers look. I have the T.U.K. brand Creepers in white and I find them a bit too heavy and stiff, these are a lot more light weight without losing any height in the sole and fit like a glove. I'll be wearing these shoes a lot this spring/summer.

THIRTY/ harem pants

I spent the day with my two best friends and we did the most girly things imaginable, from getting our nails done, to shopping, to doing our eyebrows, and so on and so on. It was fantastic, sometimes you just need to treat yo self. (Tom Haverford would be pleased)

This is what I wore.

Although these are technically my second pair of printed harem pants, I still have a bit of a fear of them. I just feel like they have the potential to look very stylish but once false move and you look like you're trying to wear pyjama pants in public. When I saw these at Winners I knew that they had to come home with me. I bought them a size bigger than I usually take to give them a sort of oversized, slouchy, harem look to them but the legs are very long on and therefore they look odd in certain shoes. I'm still trying figure out the kinks, but they're more than worth it. They're bold, black/white (best colour combo) and super comfortable. The positives outweigh the negatives in this case. Paired with my new pointy deep purple / black nails makes me feel like a rockstar in the absolute best way. I wore the pants with a cropped black velvet top and a black tshirt. For accessories I wore a a gold spiked cuff and various rings, to sort of finish off that rockstar vibe. I do apologize about the black and white photos, the lighting in my room is horrendous and despite our best efforts, the colours were all messed up. I think the black and white adds a bit to my monochromatic outfit anyways, but I'm sorry nonetheless

STYLE ICON SATURDAY/ eight

Janelle Monáe
“When I started my musical career I was a maid, I used to clean houses. My parents—my mother was a proud janitor, my step-father who raised me like his very own worked at the post office and my father was a trash man. They all wore uniforms. And that’s why I stand here today in my black and white and I wear my uniform to honor them.” Monáe said, fighting back tears.

“This is a reminder that I have work to do, I have people to uplift, I have people to inspire.”- colorlines.com

I think that quote should be enough to explain why I admire her. I have been fascinated by uniforms for all of my life and I truly admire those who wear a variation of a uniform by choice. I'm a huge fan for Harper's Bazaar magazine and my favourite segment of that magazine is where they have different people in fashion discuss what they do every day. I've found that a lot of the people they feature wear a variation of the same thing every day, be it to save time, to keep their focus on more important tasks, to honour something, or simply because they found their set style and knows what works for them. I think there is something to be said about that. What I admire most how Janelle Monáe's look is that although she is mostly seen wearing a suit, the suit is always different in some way. She only wears black and white, but she wears it in a million different ways and it always looks new and it's always exciting. Sometimes she wears a bow tie, or switches it up with a white blazer and sometimes adds some sequins into the mix. I think it's great that even though we have a basic idea of what she's going to look like, she still manages to shock us in someway. I'm also a huge fan of monochromatic looks and in my opinion, no one does it better than her.

Also, if you ever get the chance to see her live DO IT! She is such a fantastic artist on so many levels, I've seen her twice and she took my breath away both times. Her music sends a great message and she's just a fantastic human being.
