153/ WHAT I WORE TO THE OTTAWA VINTAGE SHOW

I attended the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show last weekend with my best friend, Laura, and our good friend, Michael. Unfortunately I didn't come home with any goodies this time around, but we still had blast!

It took me forever to get dressed that day. I'm usually the kind of person to throw something on in a hurry so if you give me a little bit of wiggle room to try to put thought into an outfit, it's going to take a life time.

125/ ONE BAG TAG (& REVIEW)

I'm the kind of person that likes to change their handbag on an almost daily basis. Switching out the contents to a different bag can be a bit annoying at times but to me it's rewarding and comforting to be able to match my handbag to a specific look. There was a tag video on YouTube that was pretty popular a little while ago - it was called the 'One Bag Tag' and it had YouTubers talking about the most practical (or favourite) handbag in their collection. Basically the idea behind the video was if you could only have one bag in and of your collection, which would it be and why?

This had me thinking. Although my collection is relatively modest compared to some, all of the handbags in my possession have a purpose in my eyes. Some are bold and colourful, some are more classy for events, some are huge bottomless pits that are strictly grab and go and some are just collection dust at the back of my closet (we all have those, don't lie).

When I first sat down to think about it my mind was stuck on my big Longchamp Le Pliage tote - it holds a lot, it's great in any climate and it is probably my most worn bag. Although Le Pliage totes have a ton of redeeming qualities, it isn't appropriate for all settings. It's super casual and if I were to attend any events or meetings I would be screwed.

Then a light bulb went off - my 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli!! Of course! How dare I forget?

ONE HUNDRED & ELEVEN/ longchamp love letter

Here's another post about me being a hypocrite! How fun for you!

There's a well-known trend in my life where I despise something immensely and end up becoming its biggest fan. This has happened with countless TV shows (Scrubs, The OC, Community) and even with Harry Potter (I'm sorry). The bags I'm about to share with you were high on my hatred list. They were revolting to me in a way that I had never experienced before. I used to think that they would just scream tacky but now I have completely turned around on them.

Why? BECAUSE THEY'RE SO HANDY!

I still believe that they aren't the most stylish handbags but at this point I don't think I could live without them. I'm of course talking about the infamous 'Le Pliage' bags from Longchamp. If you're not familiar with the style or brand you must be living in a box somewhere because they're just about everywhere. They've been having a moment now for the past several years and I can't go anywhere without seeing at least a handful of women sporting one.

The most common version of the Le Pliage, at least what I've seen, are of the nylon variety. They also come in 100% leather but that of course comes with a heftier price tag. The nylon that Longchamp uses is so durable and it is fantastic for those who have busy lifestyles. As someone who relies heavily on public transit, I adore that it can fit everything that I need for the day (plus so much more) and it has a little pocket on the inside that is the perfect size for my bus pass.

I am partial to the short top handles but the ones with a longer shoulder strap seem to be the more popular option. I have lived out of the larger model of this bag for the past winter because it was lightweight, waterproof, easy to wear and you can just wipe it down if you were to get anything on it. I use the smaller guy as a lunch bag; it is so easy to fill it up with items in the morning and when everything is gone by the evening you can just fold it up and throw it into any handbag that you're wearing.

Although I don't typically dabble in reviews, I decided that it was high time for me to make a post like this. I have known so many people who own and love these bags - my dear friend, Aurelia, even made a post of her own about them - but I didn't believe the hype until I owned one for myself. If you buy them from the website, a boutique or a department store they can be pretty pricey. If you're like myself and love to score a deal, there are at TON of secondhand versions floating around out there. Places like eBay and local consignment shops are a great resource. Winners and Marshall's also seem to have a good selection of Le Pliage styles and colours for great prices every time I'm there.

The orange one that I own is a size small. It is older and has a line under the embossed logo.
The black one that I own is the medium size handbag. It is a newer model which does not come with a line under the embossed logo at the front.

Both models can be folded up and secured by a clasp, they both feature the same small pocket on the inside and brown leather straps and detailing.

SEVENTY-FOUR/ spring '14 designer lust list

Although winter doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon - spring will be on its way before we know it. Here's a of a list of items that I'm totally lusting over for the upcoming season. I can't afford a single one of these items pictured, except maybe the beauty products, but it doesn't hurt to dream right? If I've said it once I've said it a million times - I have a fascination with designer items and it really doesn't look like that will be going away any time soon. So excuse me while I cry over the beauty in this post... I sincerely hope it inspires you as much as it did me.

I will be doing a clothing lust list soon. As you can probably tell every single one of the items on this post is an accessory. High end designers that make clothing for plus size women are few and far between (unless you have the money to dish out for custom pieces) but luckily a lot of plus size brands realize that we want quality on trend pieces as well. Lookout for that post sometime in the near future.

SIXTY-NINE/ the muses of marc jacobs

Every morning when I wake up, I immediately check my Instagram. What can I say? I'm a creature of habit. This morning I was elated to see pictures of the Louis Vuitton SS14 campaign, featuring the "muses of Marc Jacobs", uploaded onto Louis Vuitton's official account.

The pictures simply took my breath away
.

I, like most people who follow fashion, was heartbroken when Marc Jacobs announced his departure from the iconic brand. I personally think that he is a creative genius and of course news like this does come with a bit of a silver lining; I'm excited to see his energy based mostly on his own brand and I'm interested in seeing what the new creative director for Louis Vuitton will dream up.

His work with the Louis Vuitton brand will surely go down in fashion history. Let's all take a look and admire the final collection. *cue tears*

THRIFTED THURSDAYS/ one

Welcome to this new segment on my blog! I'm going to be calling it Thrifted Thursdays and every Thursday I'm going to be discussing one of my amazing secondhand finds. These finds can be from traditional thrift shops, garage sales, consignment shops or eBay and they can range from handcrafted, to vintage, to designer pieces. I will also discuss different tricks and techniques when buying secondhand.

The name of my blog is Secondhand Rose and seeing as I work at a consignment shop, I'm around used clothing almost daily. Although you do see some of my used clothing finds in my outfit posts, I feel like I've neglected that whole section on my wardrobe here on my blog.

I also believe that there is still a lot of negativity, and almost like a stigma, associated with buying secondhand clothing and I'm here to disprove as many of those myths as possible. Let's get started, shall we?

-----------------------------------------

I decided to start off the segment with one of my latest and most favourite designer finds. I picked this up at Rikochet Resale, a consignment shop here in Ottawa, and I am head over heels in love with this piece. It is an authentic classic Burberry lambswool scarf and it is a piece I've been lusting after for pretty much my entire life. The trick with buying designer items secondhand is to find a credible shop. There are tons of counterfeit pieces out there and it is sometimes tricky to determine the legitimacy of an item by yourself. I'm wary of items found in thrift shops like Value Village or Goodwill that claim to be designer, and there's no way I'm going to shell out money for designer goods off of eBay. I like to feel the item and see it for myself, or in the case of this consignment shop, know that it was check thoroughly by a trained professional.

Although I have been lusting after this scarf for what seems like forever now, I always knew that it was out of my price range. The scarf I bought is an older style, but scarves at Burberry are traditionally price upwards of $300 (depending on style, materials used, size, ect), and I picked this one up for only $100. The price I paid may still seem steep for a lot of you but you have to understand that this is a classic, traditional piece and it is coming from a company that hardly, if ever, has sales. I also have a sort of passion for designer scarves and I knew that adding this to my (small) collection was a must. I'm beyond happy with this purchase.

STYLE ICON SATURDAY/ twelve

MARC JACOBS

I have a very weird relationship with his brands. It's something like an obsession, it's almost a sickness. I fantasize daily about Marc by Marc Jacobs accessories and Marc Jacobs ready-to-wear pieces. My undying love for this man's work is definitely no secret.

I have watched the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2013 RTW show about a dozen times and I'm still blown away by it. Monochromatic looks and stripes hold a very special place in my heart, and in my opinion no one does those looks better than Marc Jacobs.

I am always lusting over certain pieces from his lines. Right now it's the MBMJ clear cross body bag, tomorrow it may be something different all together. I fear that one day I will just turn into a giant walking advertisement for his brands, but I really can't help it. It's like an addiction, really. I haven't put my finger on what exactly it is about it all, but everything he does is just so visually appealing to me. My interest right now is mostly focused on Marc by Marc Jacobs and that's mainly because the prices are more within my reach. I hope to one day say that about his main brand, and I would die to have a piece from his work with Louis Vuitton.

I am fortunate enough to own a few items from MBMJ and his main line. I did buy them all secondhand but they are all authentic and I love that I got them all for a fraction of the cost. My favourite pieces that I own are the black leather clutch and the royal blue Natasha Q bag. I do wear my black MBMJ bag more often than not though, it's just so big and it holds everything.

"I love to take things that are everyday and comforting and make them into the most luxurious things in the world."
